Health
Before we had an office, or even a name people recognised, we had these camps — early mornings in unfamiliar villages, folding tables under the open sky, and the quiet satisfaction of a queue that finally reached its last patient.
Health camps were the primary vehicle through which the members of Uddyom lunged headfirst into their project of social intervention. Targetting the population in the rural / semi-urban areas in and around Kolkata, Uddyom carried out several such camps over their initial years. With time, the modus operandi of hosting the camps, and the delivery of health related services, were analysed and improvements introduced.
However, the utility of the camps has been debated from the angle of repeat treatments to improve the health of the target population. Considering all aspects, it was resolved to concentrate on acquiring a plot of land in a rural area to properly disseminate treatment and look after one group of people for sustained improvement in their health. Hence, currently Uddyom is not hosting health camps anymore.
